YEKWON PLAYS BEETHOVEN (Oct 3, 5)

Experience the extraordinary artistry of esteemed pianist and Van Cliburn competition laureate, Yekwon Sunwoo, as he returns to the spotlight. This time, Sunwoo offers an insightful interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, showcasing his deep connection with the composer's intricate and reflective work. The program also includes Holst's majestic Jupiter and J. S. Bach's Prelude, Chorale and Fugue, both arranged by Samuel Adler, along with Britten's lively Three Divertimenti. Immerse yourself in a captivating musical journey that highlights the rich diversity of classical music.


NYCP and Korean Cultural Center New York co-present an evening of exceptional piano artistry, featuring Yekwon Sunwoo. The program begins with the timeless elegance of J. S. Bach’s Partita No. 2 in C minor, followed by Rachmaninoff’s captivating Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42, which showcases the composer’s lyrical depth and technical prowess. The recital culminates with Schumann’s expressive Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6, a vivid collection of contrasting dances filled with poetic charm and emotional intensity.


Presented by the Korean Cultural Society of Boston, NYCP returns to the New England Conservatory’s historic Jordan Hall. Experience the artistry of Van Cliburn laureate Yekwon Sunwoo in his interpretation of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. The program also includes Holst's Jupiter, J. S. Bach's Prelude, Chorale and Fugue (both arranged by Samuel Adler), and Britten's Three Divertimenti.


The program offers a fresh take on masterpieces, beginning with Teddy Niedermaier’s Concert Fantasy on Der Rosenkavalier, where violinist Miho Saegusa delivers a compelling solo performance that captures the rich emotional depth of Richard Strauss's opera. This is followed by a unique chamber orchestra rendition of Schubert’s Octet, expanding the intimate work into a larger, more dynamic setting. The concert provides a reimagined experience of these beloved compositions, blending tradition with innovation to highlight their enduring appeal.

Three significant composers are showcased in this program, beginning with the premiere of Songbird by distinguished Korean-American composer Juri Seo, followed by David Diamond’s dynamic Rounds. The evening concludes with Brahms’ iconic Double Concerto, featuring soloists Bella Hristova and returning cellist Carter Brey. The performance offers a captivating blend of contemporary and romantic music, all set against a breathtaking backdrop.

In a captivating blend of premieres and timeless classics, the evening opens with the premiere of Louis Karchin’s The Four Seasons of Bernini, which draws on Mozart’s style and the sculptures of the Italian Renaissance artist. This is followed by the graceful melodies of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3, featuring the artistry of Stella Chen, the ensemble's artist-in-residence. The program continues with another premiere, George Meyer’s Triple Concerto for Two Violins and Viola, bringing to life the musical contributions of Emma Frucht, Brian Hong, and the composer himself. The night culminates in the intense and passionate strains of Haydn’s Symphony No. 49, "La Passione," bringing the concert to a stirring conclusion.


NEW YORK CLASSICAL PLAYERS

New York City’s innovative young chamber orchestra, New York Classical Players (NYCP), is dedicated to the highest standards of artistry, collaboration, and virtuosity. Under the leadership of music director Dongmin Kim, NYCP performs across the United States, South America, and Asia.

Since its founding in 2010, NYCP has performed around 250 concerts. Prominent artists who have appeared with the orchestra include Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, Kim Kashkashian, Pamela Frank, Charles Neidich, Sumi Jo, Yeol Eun Son, Yekwon Sunwoo, Chee-Yun, Stefan Jackiw, Jasmine Choi, and Richard O'Neill.

NYCP is committed to presenting free performances of familiar masterpieces, bold new commissions, and unexpected musical treasures to the public. Each season, thousands of NYCP concertgoers experience both the dynamic power of the orchestral repertoire and the versatile intimacy of chamber performance. NYCP is under the direction of Founder and Music Director Dongmin Kim, with guidance and support from a dedicated board of directors.
