Every season is a journey, through familiar works and new discoveries, and through the changing relationships among composers, performers, audiences, and the communities in which music is heard.
In its seventeenth season, New York Classical Players brings together orchestral landmarks, intimate chamber music, living composers, imaginative arrangements, and artists whose distinct voices invite us to listen anew.
The journey moves across centuries and musical forms, but its direction remains consistent: to approach great music with curiosity, place tradition in conversation with the present, and create performances that feel immediate, shared, and alive.

The Orchestral Journey
Across five programs, NYCP moves from the wit and brilliance of Mendelssohn and Richard Strauss to the emotional breadth of Brahms, the spiritual intensity of Handel, the searching language of Beethoven and Elgar, and the openness and clarity of Copland and Haydn.
These works are joined by music of today, including premieres, recent compositions, and new arrangements. Rather than appearing as separate additions, contemporary voices are woven throughout the season, reshaping the context in which familiar repertoire is heard.
The season also brings an exceptional group of soloists and musical partners into close collaboration with the orchestra. Concertos, ensemble works, and newly conceived projects allow each program to grow from the encounter between individual artistry and NYCP’s collaborative sound.
In December, NYCP presents Handel’s Messiah for the first time. Performed with chamber-orchestra forces and NYCP Choral, the project opens a new chapter for the ensemble while returning to one of the most enduring works in the repertoire.
The February program offers another point of connection across the season. Beethoven’s Große Fuge, performed by the full string ensemble, carries the exploration of his quartets from the chamber series into the orchestral space—revealing music conceived for four players on a broader, more visceral scale.
Orchestral breadth and chamber intimacy become part of one continuing musical conversation.
Returning to Beethoven
NYCP’s chamber music series began in the 2015–16 season in partnership with the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Presented under the title Beethoven Encounters, the inaugural series explored Beethoven as a restless and searching composer whose music continues to challenge performers and listeners.
At the Bruno Walter Auditorium, the partnership has often extended beyond the performance itself. Programs have drawn on the Library’s collections, introducing audiences to related scores, books, and archival materials. The series has since included a collaboration with Carnegie Hall, and Fort Lee Music Hall joined as a co-presenting partner in the 2022–23 season.
For the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death, NYCP returns to this musical conversation with a complete traversal of the sixteen string quartets. Four quartets will be presented in each of four programs, tracing his development from the elegance and invention of the early works to the radical imagination of the late quartets.
More than a retrospective, the cycle reflects the continuing evolution of a series that began over a decade ago, and NYCP’s own changing relationship with music that continues to reveal new possibilities.
