A dialogue between lyricism and virtuosity shapes this sweeping program. Andrew Hsu’s Arabesques, written for solo viola and strings, receives its premiere with NYCP’s own violist En-Chi Cheng, illuminating a delicate interplay of motion and stillness. Acclaimed cellist Mark Kosower, a returning guest with NYCP, performs Tchaikovsky’s elegant Variations on a Rococo Theme and the brooding intensity of Pezzo capriccioso, Op. 62. The evening concludes with Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, heard in a chamber orchestra version crafted by Yoomi Paick that brings new intimacy to its sweeping drama.
